  1. Hello~I'm Leana.I often use the buttom-up(question-answer) method when doing the reading test.I think it's a good skill. It can not only save time but remind me the key point.

  2. I like today's "learning strategy" very much. These tips help me to do reading tests more correctly.
In addition to the skill "G-L-G",the methods "buttom-up" and "top-down " are also useful.
If I always keep these tips in mind,I am sure that my reading will become better.

  4. Hi,I'm jeff. The main ideas and detialed structures of articles can be learned sooner by adopting G.L.G learning strategies from this lecture. Besides, I am able to answer the exam questions quicker after using "button-up" and "top-down" tactics. I believe that I will be better if I keep particing this type of strategy.

    How well do you read?

How often do you read something? What kind of things do you read? Do you always read in the same way?

Think about these different things that you might read in the course of a typical week:

An article in a scientific journal
    An economics textbook
    A newspaper article
    A poem
    Sports results on the internet
    A telephone directory
    A train timetable
    A novel
In each case, what information are you looking for? Do you start reading at the beginning and read every word until the end? Or do you just select the information you need and ignore the rest? Do you follow a narrative?

    Different ways of reading

Clearly, each case is different. If you are reading the phone book or a train timetable, you just find the information you need as quickly as possible. It would be stupid to read the whole thing!

If you are reading a novel, you will probably be following the narrative, and you need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. If you read a poem, you will probably concentrate on each word with a lot of attention. If you a reading a textbook or an article in a journal, you will probably use both of these methods. You might read the introduction to get an idea about what the article or chapter deals with, then go through it to find the information you need.

    Skimming and scanning

Two basic ways of reading are called “skimming” and “scanning”. “Skimming” is reading through something just to get an idea of its contents and argument – this is the way you might read a newspaper article, or a textbook chapter, for example. If you find it interesting or think it may be useful, you probably then look at it again in more detail. “Scanning” is the way you read a timetable or list of information like the phone book – you ignore what is not necessary and look for the specific details you need – a key word or number perhaps.

If you are aware of these different methods of reading, you can save time and make your studying more successful.

  8. The skills I learned in the class are useful.
I persisted in reading every words and sentences in the article
because I afraid to lose any information , but it is so hard to finish and I still missed something what I should read, in other word , I lost in the article.

After the class , I will try these reading skills to help me. do my best.

I don’t know whether I will improve or not ,but at least I have a new guide.

  9. The post is something I searched on the internet
    ,maybe it would help everyone.

A tip for speeding up your active reading
You should learn a huge amount from your reading. If you read passively, without learning, you're wasting your time. So train your mind to learn.

Try the SQ3R technique. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recall and Review.

    Survey
Gather the information you need to focus on the work and set goals:

Read the title to help prepare for the subject
Read the introduction or summary to see what the author thinks are the key points
Notice the boldface headings to see what the structure is
Notice any maps, graphs or charts. They are there for a purpose
Notice the reading aids, italics, bold face, questions at the end of the chapter. They are all there to help you understand and remember.
    Question
Help your mind to engage and concentrate. Your mind is engaged in learning when it is actively looking for answers to questions.

Try turning the boldface headings into questions you think the section should answer.

    Read
Read the first section with your questions in mind. Look for the answers, and make up new questions if necessary.

    Recall
After each section, stop and think back to your questions. See if you can answer them from memory. If not, take a look back at the text. Do this as often as you need to.

    Review
Once you have finished the whole chapter, go back over all the questions from all the headings. See you if can still answer them. If not, look back and refresh your memory.

  12. Hello everyone,
    I'm Carol,my majoy is Marketing.
This Tuesday is my first time to join this class.
I felt the course in this class was vivid and useful.
I learned some test skills, such as 'bottom up','G-L-G' and 'top down',all of them help a lot.

In my opinion, listening is the most important
    part in learning foreign languages.
The first step in learning another language is promoting our listening ability.
We can listen to the radio(ICRT or Advanced Studio classroom...) constantly.

Whatevr,it's really great to meet everyone in this class.
    Happy Mid-autumn Festival!!!

  13. Hi! I'm kyo!I often use the "buttom-up" when I doing read test.It can let me know how to choose the question quickly. In this class, I have learned so many mothods before i didn't know.I will try to use it in my next TOEIC text and hope it can help me pass the examination easily! Finally! I should say that my English was pretty poor!^^"

  14. I usually use "bottoom up" to do the reading test because it can help me know what the questions are and the main point about the article quickily,so some time I don't need to read the entire article.

  15. About my reading habit:
As for reading magazines or textbook,my habit is that I usually read one article two times, the first time is just browse and then mark the vocabulary I don't know, but I try to guest what is this mean, and don't consult the dictionary(but some time I'm lazy to do that).

After finish the first reading,I can figure out the main point and the structure about this article, but don't know the the detail due to some vocabulary .So after I look up these vocabularys on the dictionary, I start to read the article again, and this time I can know more about the article and connect it to my knowledge, and I also highlight some sentences useful and take note into my small notebook,in this way,I can review this at any time
and help me increase my vocabulary.

The above is my reading habit, but I think it still has a lot for improvement, and I will try to make use of some strategies discussing in the class.

  16. Hello,everyone.I’m Chris.
Before the class on September 29.I also had my own method for learning English in my senior high school period. For example: watching American movies, listening to an English radio programs, etc. At first, I studied hard. Even set goals and tried to achieve them. But later, I was too lazy to keep up. I have regret for that now.
After the class on Tuesday, the three learning strategy: bottom-up, top-down and G-L-G(global-local-global) are very useful skills in the reading or listening test. It let me take a short time to finish a reading, and catch the key point easily. So I can answer the questions quickly and more correctly. I like these learning strategy than the old one. I hope I can practice it all the time, and pass the English test finally.

I learned some new strategies such as 'bottom up','G-L-G' and 'top down' in the first class. These can help me organize the whole topic. I think that these are really useful.

But after first and second classes, I know that I can skim the unknown word. Just use the context to realize the word's meaning. I'm glad to learn this strategies and I hope that I can use it well.

For today's learning strategy, bottom-up is a great skill, BUT it's not the skill I usually use. I tried to master this skill before and I notice that I often forgot what the question I read is saying about.Beacuse of that I need to read question again and that waste my time even more.

Therefore, I begin from the first sentence every reading test, which called Top-down skill. It's happy to know that there is a name for this skill and I can imporved this skill again.

I have stop english learnig for almost four years, I wish this class can let my english be fluent again.

  48. Hello everyone! I am Wing.
This week we get many useful learning strategies, they can be used both on listening and reading.
On reading part, the most impressive strategy for me is global-local-global. Because it can be connected with my learning experience in senior high school. At that time, my English teacher always required us to write down an outline of every article we read, but we only use several words and simple pictures to make the outline. That really help me to understand what the article want to tell us and learn to build a complete structure of an article . Just like "global-local-global" mention that we have to catch the main idea of the whole article and then try to find the supporting opinion and back to the main idea at the end of the article. I think that combine these two strategies will let us get the main point of articles faster.
On listening part, I think lecture note taking is very important. No matter we try to buttom-up or top-down, we have to catch the main point of these saying sentence first. So I try to write down the key words of every sentence in my practice and hope it will work.
I will try to use these strategies on my learning, and learn from you and share my personal experence with you. Through this way, we can improve our English ability together.

First,i want to say that I fell gratitude to the teacher, because before this class i didn't know the "strategies"about reading and listening. When i got an article,I couldn't get the skills for analyzing the structure, all I could do was just looked through the full essay without effyciency.
I think G-L-G is the most important concept , it helps all the readers finding out the composition and get the theme right away. Then we can use"bottom-up" or"top-down",depending on your own habit. As for me,"top-down"is the better choice, since I'm not used to look the questions before looking the article. Finally, learning to draw some "inferences" is also quite significant,it let us had real understanding of the article so that we can answer the questions easily.

  60. POST:

    Train Your Brain With Exercise

Not only is exercise smart for your heart and weight, but it can make you smarter and better at what you do.

    Reviewed by Amal Chakraburtty, MD

Anyone with a brain exercises these days, but did you know exercise can return the favor and train your brain? Not only is exercise smart for your heart and weight, but it can make you smarter and better at what you do.

"I like to say that exercise is like taking a little Prozac or a little Ritalin at just the right moment," says John J. Ratey, MD, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and author of A User's Guide to the Brain. "Exercise is really for the brain, not the body. It affects mood, vitality, alertness, and feelings of well-being."

Stephen C. Putnam, MEd, took up canoeing in a serious way to combat the symptoms of adult ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Then he wrote a book, titled Nature's Ritalin for the Marathon Mind, about the benefits of exercise on troublesome brain disorders such as ADHD, a neurological/behavioral condition resulting in hyperactivity and the inability to focus on tasks.

Putnam cites studies of children who ran around for 15 to 45 minutes before class and cut their ants-in-the-pants behavior by half when they got to class. As with most exercise, the effects were relatively lasting -- smoothing out behavior two to four hours after the exercise.

Putnam also points to some preliminary animal research that suggests that exercise can cause new stem cells to grow, refreshing the brain and other body parts. According to Ratey, exercise also stimulates nerve growth factors. "I call it Miracle-Gro for the brain," he says.
    How Exercise Trains the Brain

Christin Anderson, MS, wellness and fitness coordinator of the University of San Francisco, explains that exercise affects many sites within the nervous system and sets off pleasure chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine that make us feel calm, happy, and euphoric.

In other words, if you don't want to wait for those good feelings to come by accident (if they do), you can bring them on by exercising.

"When one exercises," Anderson says, "you can think more clearly, perform better, and your morale is better. This is pure science -- stimulate your nervous system and function at a higher level."
    Effects of Exercise on Depression

Almost everyone has heard of the "fog of war," but the "fog of living" is depression. "Depression affects memory and effectiveness (not to mention the ability to get up, get dressed, and function)," Anderson says. "If you can control your physiology, you can relax, focus, and remember."

In a study reported in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness in 2001, 80 young male and female volunteers were tested for mood and then did aerobics for an hour. Of the 80, 52 were depressed before the exercise. That group was the most likely to benefit, reporting a reduction in anger, fatigue, and tension. They also felt more vigorous after the workout.

  66. I also find an article "How to improve your English skills" via internet.
    I share it with everybody.

    :IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH READING SKILLS
Make a habit of reading regularly. Read as many English books, newspapers and magazines as you can find. Again this should be fun so make sure the texts you choose are not too difficult for you. If the book or article you are reading is a chore, then find something easier. You could even try reading graded books written especially for ESL learners.

Find an author you like and read all their books. By doing this you will get used to the style of a particular author and the typical vocabulary and grammar they use. As you read more of his/her books you will find it easier and easier.

If you have a local library, find out if they stock English books or if they have bilingual editions of English classics. Or ask them to stock English translations of books you are already familiar with.

Try reading things more than once. Read something and then read it again a few weeks/months later. You should find your understanding has improved.

Discuss what you have read. I am more than happy to discuss books with you on the forum.
!Learning Tip - don't try to understand every word. Try to understand the overall meaning of a sentence or passage.

!Learning Tip - don't translate - only use a dictionary if a word keeps appearing in a text and you still don't understand it.

    IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH WRITING SKILLS
Get the most out of your dictionary by understanding how to use it well. You can use your dictionary to find words, for meaning, for pronunciation, to check your spelling and to understand explanations.

Copy out short passages of English text from newspapers, magazines or books.

Try dictation exercises. You can do this online or get friends to read out text for you to write and then check your writing - concentrate on spelling and punctuation.

There are many forums on the net, find one about your interests or hobbies. Apologize if you think you have made any mistakes and politely ask for feedback.

    Find English speaking pen friends

so on ...Because the article is too long ,so I post some of it.

Actually,I don't like reading books, even comic books. So,when it comes to "learning strategy",I used to watch movies on english movie channels like many people do. But it seems not so efficient. I think that's because I did not use a learning strategy when reading, listening,or watch anything about english. So,l would like to learn how to do these things easier with everyone in the class. I really like the skill of "bottom-up". When I was a senior high school student, I use this a lot. I like to look the questions first, and read the text. Sometimes I may misunderstand the main point. If I can see the questions fist I can find the answers at the some time. I can save a lot of time when in the test. If I don't have the stress of time, I would like to use the skill of "up-down". Looking the text became a way of get some new informations. In different situation I might use different ways.

  90. "This is a comment about Jeffreyc’s post."

After reading your post, I greatly agree to your suggestions, except that someone can learn English well by listening to English songs, because I have heard that it’s useless to let a person who doesn’t real master in English just listen to English, therefore, this English strategy is a little bit confusing to me.
In my experience, when I enjoy a English song, I always just enjoy the melody only, and always ignore the words of the songs spontaneously.
As the result of this reasons, it is not a good ideal for me, a person who doesn’t real master in English, to learn English by listening to English songs.

His reading skill is as same as me when I read the English magazine such as Advanced, Ivy and ect. I won't use this when I read papers which is some pro articles. At this time vocabulary is not the most important thing. I just need to understand the meaning of the article.

  92. Hi,I'm Clair again.
After reading Alex's post,I think the "SQ3R" technique is very useful.Actually,I used to reading article, not learning. My English is still not well althought I often reading English paper.Sometimes I looked up dictionary at once when I met a vocabulary which I don't know. But I spent less time on reviewing them.So I still can't remember any vocabulary. It do waste me a lot of time. Now,I will try to use "3R" to let me read article more efficiently. But I feel "Question" is the most important.Just like the article say "Question help your mind to engage and concentrate,Your mind is engaged in learning when it is actively looking for answers to questions." By Question,we may make a guess, try to think and pay more attention on reading. It's the moment we are really in learning. That's what I want.I believe if I follow the rule,my English will promote apparently.

  93. Hello everyone, I am Cindy.
In the first class, I learned about some reading skills and I find that when I am taking a test, I usually use "bottom-up" strategy. I will look the questions first and go back to the artical to find the answers if the artical is long. However, I donot consider myself a good guesser.
For me, when I am reading some outside reading, I always want to have some steps. First, I will read it through and mark the vocabulary I do not know then look them up in the dictionary at one time. And the last one is try my best to remember to vocabulary while reading the artical again. In this way, I can understand the artical's main idea and easily know how the vocabulary are been used. Nevertheless, if I confront a long artical, sometimes I just check the words while reading. And I know that is really not good for me to learn English.
I hope that I can use the strategy that taught in the class in my English learning.

  94. Hi, I’m Shelley.
According to the paragraph from 阿永 , I agree the post about his learning habits.
Many people usually to check the new vocabularys from dictionary as they read, including me, because we want to know the true meaning from the article immediately , but it’s not a good idea for our reading.
Just as 阿永 said, he often figured out the structure of the article without dictionary in his first reading, then he wrote down these unfamiliar words into his notebook in the second reading. I think it’s a good way to elevate our thinking ability.A number of vocabulary have different and even far apart meaning,it's impossible to recognize any word. For example, the word “deposit”, in the economics’ terminology, it means that we put the money in the bank ; but in the material science terminology, it means a fabrication about a thin layer coated on the substance, like chips and electronic devices etc. When we encounter this situation, all we have to do is “Guest Only”. You can search the clues from the context between sentence and paragraph ,or you can dabble at any kind of research highlights to develop your knowledge in peacetime,it can provide you more information as you read.

  96. According to Alex's post, I think of my math teacher. When we were preparing the exam for entering a university, he always told us to look the catalog first and know a concept about what we are going to read. And then start to study, after we finish a chapter, we should close the books and recall what we just have read. If we can recite or write down in our words, that means we really understand and memorize them.
I feel that what my teacher said is similar to the "SQ3R" strategy. Thus, I agree with SQ3R and I think it is apply to all use.

For example, watching forign movies, listening to the English radio or music and reading English magazines or newspaper. Besides, there are some skills such as skimming and scanning and SQ3R. These are very useful for learning English.
