  2. I’d like to talk about some difficulty in learning English to me.
1.There is no perseverance, always give up halfway, buy some English book for study, it is always since reading in page one each time.
2.Can't remember the vocabu studied newly, make me very disheartened, finish reciting the new vocabulary soon each time, will see next time it is a strange feeling.
3.There is no proper study partner, for example can talk or share mood each other in English at any time.
These let me feel very depressed, so unable to improve English ability effectively all the time.
By the way, I have a stupid idea in the class, perhaps can be at the midtern or final, the intact English song of one performance, or imitate passing some lines in a certain film of star liking, as examining the basis, I have said, this is a stupid suggestion.by joseph(黃昭通)

  3. This week’s strategic of class is textual relationship. This is a skill that I often used in writing. The problem of my writing is I know what the subject is telling me what to do and I know what I should write, the annoying part is I cannot articulate it good enough to let others know what I am talking about.

The teacher of senior high drove in me the general-specific trick, I used the skill minutely until my teacher told me he is dizzy with my similarity composition and asked me to try some other tech.

It may not the way but the simplest way to master a skill is to practice it again and again and again, and again. After that the man will earn yearn for, it is like a cow will chew the cud to digest better.

Okay, it is a little gross but quite vivid huh.

  4. General-specific is a way we usually use in writing. It seems simple but we often forget it.
For example, we are writing about a trip to Canada. We say the country is beautiful, but we didn't say why is it beautiful? We have to describe the traits of the country to make the writing more attractive.
As for speaking, I have a problem which is I get nervous easily when I was speaking in front of a little of people. My voice will shake so I can't give a articulate speech. Maybe I should speak up more to facilitate my speaking.

  5. First I have to say that I’m not a good speaker ,but when it comes to “writing” ,I truly have my own way to be a good writer.
1.At the very beginning, it’s important to declare the main idea of the article. One of my English teacher had said that writing an English essay is not like writing a Chinese essay which you may use a lot of sentences but not to write the main purpose directly.
2.At the second paragraph ,stating the detail, for instance , if you’re talking about your family, you can tell us what's the special memories or who’s the person that affects you the most.
3.Always remember, to give examples can beef up your arguments.
4.Be careful of your tone, to be both cocky or uncertain are not allowed.
5.Making a conclusion is also significant. Unless you make a proper conclusion you can say the article is complete.

About having the diffiuclty of memorizing new words. I have a tip that I learn from the research from England. It says that rolling your eyeballs from right to left and left t o right quickly will help to beef up your brain in memorizing. Maybe you can try it next time and assess the effect of it.

  7. After this class, the most impressive thing for me is "Determining patterned organization textural relationship",especially "General-example" and "Cause-effect."
Until now I find out what happened to my writing. When I read articles in chinese,I'd love readind those interesting instances, and I always use the same way in my chinese articles. But I used to use "general" way when I'm writing in English,so my articles was usually boring and not attractive.I know some of reason is I always feel my English is not good to articulate what I want to say,and most of my English teacheres overlook the writing.Even some of them tell us if we are good in reading ,and then we will be good in writing.Maybe it works at some place, but not all.I absolutely run with reading and writing looks like similar, but I also feel they are totally different.Definitely,if we can use those vocabulary or phrase we learn from we read in writing,it can make our articles more vivid. But writing more need people use their ability of organization and imagination. But I can't deny reading and writing still complement each other. After all, more we read more we learn, and we can use what we learn everywhere, not mention about writing.
When we are reading a article,we can find out it's "textual relationship",and we can also use those skill in writing ,just likes teather say in the class.I think leave a message on this website is very good for writing.Because I feel I do write a article, and I try to use those skill what I learn from the class.I wish my English will improve step-by-step.

  8. I leave a comment for rita's post.
I feel some points of her is very working,
especially "Be careful of your tone, to be both cocky or uncertain are not allowed."
When I am writing, one of the most important difficulty is my pronunciation is not correct,so I usually can't spell some vocabulary we want to express. And sometimes I don't know what a word mean clearly or whether I use a word at right place. So my article is hard to be read to others.I know I should beef up my ability of vocabulary. I usually learn a new word and remember it,but few days later,I will forget it again and again.Maybe someone can tell me how to learn new vocabulary more efficiently.

  9. This week we talked about”texual relationship”. I think that”problem-solution”,”question-answer”and”cause-effect” are really helpful and usually use in science papers. When I see problems, questions or causes in the front part of science papers,I’ll guess solutions, answers or effects. Just like my professor said “you can’t just put your data on the paper ,you have to tell us why your investigetions are useful.”. So we found the problems and made solutions.
I remember that I had GEPT test when I was a senior high school student , I passed the listening and reading tests , but my writing and speaking tests are so so . After that , I beef up my writing and speaking abilities . I think I need more vocabularys in my head , and when I want to use them , they’ll come to my mind . So I started to write some sentences in English at my blogs , and watch series to make me articulate .
I can also share what I felt about that with my friends . I think that really facilitate my English.

  10. This lesson tells us what is "textural relationship".In these relationships,"problem - solution" and "question - answer" are the most commonly appear in scientific articles.Scientific articles are used to facilitate us to experiment,so they told us what peoblems would encountered and how to solve the problem. To master this trait will enable us to read scientific articles more quickly.

  11. The lesson is tell us about textual relationship, and the most impressive thing in my mind is that "question-answer"! It's really helpful, and I think this tip can really beef up my reading skills. I really run with that! Because of this class, I become more interested in reading recently! I feel so substantial. But I think that I really have to get more vocabulary in my mind! Good luck to me!

  12. I want to leave a comment for Willian! The way you say that can help memorize the words is very cute! I wil try that next time,I hope that can beef up my memorize ability for everything! 13. The must impressive this week is "patterns of organization". They classify the articles we read mostly in the university into twelve patterns such as "course and effect". The list above the screen is all about what I read before. It is really helpful if I can recognize which type of the article is. This classify is not only increase the comprehension of the articles but facilitate skill of writing. When I was a high school students, if I need to write article, I can analyze the the patterns, then search familiar artiles we read before. After that, I might find a article to consult. This will beef up my writing skill.

  14. It's really good to have some of you share your learning experiences here and your tips on how to be a strategic learner. But I do notice that most of you do NOT seem to get the picture, for you're actually talking about the definition or your understanding of "textual relationship" but not about your thoughts on how to learn L2 more effectively (which IS what you're supposed to talk about). Anway, I still appreciate all your hard work on the posts and comments. This will definitely be rewarding. Trust me!

I want to share my opinions about writing skills.
As a writer,we need lots of resources or experiences to share with others.
In my opinion,a good writer must be good at reading first.
It is necessary to read a plenty of books or other articles before writing.
Especially in a foreign language that we are not used to.
The first step we have to do is reading and learning other's writing traits.
Do not be cocky and write in your own way,or you'll be mistakes again and again.

  17. I always think English writing's organization is easier than Chinese. For me, the way to writing is main idea—details—conclusion. So when I learned to “textual relationship”, I know that English writing is not a simple work. I need more hard work for beef up my writing and reading skills. But I didn’t figure out the difference between 8 tips. They are a little similar in Chinese translation; maybe teacher will explain more details in next class.
I think the best advantage in the lesson is that all the strategy skills can double, double using in writing, reading, listening, and speaking. That means, every strategy skill is a kind of logic, a kind of formula to lead me to catch important main idea easily and quickly.
I really yearn to master such powerful skills as soon as possible, but I know that I still need more practice.

On the other hand, there is one method to reading articles that matgin marking after reading a paragraph.

  20. This week we talked about "textual relationship",and what inspired me more in all of the skills are "general-example" and "question-answer".

I guess that many people has a same problem with me. When I write in Chinese, I always have many ideas to tell; but when the same subject is written in English, I will feel so helpless, and just don't know how to express myself.
This two skills can facilitate us when we don't know how to organise all the ideas. For example, when we want to describe our hometown,we can talk about the location and how's the weather first, and then we describe the most impressive thing. And when we want to talk about the air pollution,we can bring up a question and solve it.

finally, I think a good writer can always tell readers some useful information or something new.
Okay, this post is really beef up my brain.

  21. I'd like to leave a comment for Carol, because you indeed remind me the most important in writing,Ture,if we want to facilitate our writing skills ,then we have to "read" as many as possiable! When pondering the rhetoric or example you should use on the essay, the books you've read may help you unexpectedly. But remeber, don't use too many abstruse words or "allusion " (ex.catch 22 is an allusion ,but is a simple one of course. )or it'll tax the reader.

  22. About last lesson,I interested in writings.
When I was a senior high school student, the English teacher always tought us that we should develope our imagination before we started writing.
Then the opening we should write right to the point that my teacher has said.
Just like Miss Chang said we have to get the main idea to take in the compisition.
First we should express our purpose when in the opening.
Then use the idea web to search what we need and make categorizations.
The following to give some examples and take in our comments.
At last we turn round the main idea and talk about the further idea.
    Then a compitision is finished.
I run with the method for writing.
I think this tips that can almost use in any stytle of writing.
If we want to beef up our writing, I think that is a very good method for our English.
Everyone in this class yearn to make English better, thus we can use the teacher's traits for learning.

Matgin making is very nice method in any study to beef up our learning.

As far as I am concerned, the following ways can help you move towards becoming a more strategic learner.
1.Making to-do lists → With your own to-do lists, you can learn how to plan your time intelligently. No matter if it's a grocery list or a list of life goals you want to achieve, a to-do list can beef up your brain and help keep you on track.
2.Being good at time management →Do one thing at a time.It is much more effective to focus on one task, and when you’re done, move on to the next.
3.Concentrating on what you need to know → Being distracted from something will interrupt your thinking.Concentrating on what you need to know can facilitate your deliberation.
4.Taking regular breaks →Concentration lags over lengthy periods and you will learn more after your breaks.

I am more able to understand articles when I know time sequence. And group-member can quickly understand main ideal and detail of the article. These tips can beef up speed of reading.
In writing, I think general-specifics or general-examples is very helpful. We can write a gist at first and then can write other details or give some example. Finally, we write the conclusion is complete.

  41. Hi, everyone, I’m Shelley.

This week’s topic mentioned the reading method again, but it increased more tips and practical activities which included group discussion, reading short paragraph notes and then make an impromptu speaking, and sharing classmates’ comments etc, they all deepened my impression and encourage me to speak loudly in front of everyone.

In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the government of Mainland China trained a lot of people in order to play host to customers or athletes around the world in English. I have read a report from TV about how they facilitated the” English Speaking” ability. They spoke a sentence or paragraph loudly even like make a shout in every day’s class. I’m surprised that a lot of people would love to run with this method to beef up their speaking skills. The report interviewed a 80- year- old gentleman and he was also the volunteer of Olympics, he said that he yearned to help these foreign guests and speaking English loudly every day let he take the first step in English conversation.

From this report, I realize the speaking skill in English needs more courage than technical. I agree saying loudly without fear is the only way to enhance speaking ability. If we all could do these details and then our speaking will become better.

  49. Hello everyone!
About the "texual relationship", there are few different types that we can tell apart.
In my opinion, we have read a lot if we want to write well. I confront some problem that is similar to some other classmates. When I trying to say somrthing, I can't completely write down what I really want to express and the vocabulary or the writing skill I use is usually not deep enough. Or sometimes I know a word, however I don't know how to use it correctly.

And there are some views that I have heard from others.
    1. when we read, we can assess what kind of texual realtionship it is and try to guess what will happen next.
    2. Read more and extensively. And we can memorize some word or phrase that might be useful and the most important is to understand how to use it in our own writing.
    3. Write often. We can facilitate our writing from our daily life such as a diary. Once we get used to writing English, we can be familiar with the skill and make our composition more fluently.

  50. Hi,everyone!
I would like to talk about how to make a good listener. There are two points from my experience and from what my high school teacher told me.

1.To be a good listener, you should be learning from listening to some English songs. That would help you to listen to what they sing. I like to listen the music about the type of rock and romantic. Although those songs help me a lot, there are still some area that I can not reach. So now I yearn for listening to much more English songs.
2.Listen to English radio also can help you to be a good listener. It has one trait that you just spend five to thirty minutes everyday. You may practice your listening well.

  51. A good reader can read fast and get the article’s main idea simultaneously. How did they do it so well? I think there are some tips as follows:
1.Using the G-L-G method to read the article: The first G means the article’s main idea, usually the topic sentence. L means supporting details and second G means the summary.
2.Skim, scan and glance: To skim through the article for main idea. To scan the details of the article. To Glance at the article for time order. So you can catch the trait of article quickly.
3.Just read: To read more articles can beef up the reading skills.

First, reading habit.Good habits cause good readers. For example, teking some time to read,1~2 artices a day will beef up your reading ability and vocabulary gradeually.
Second, reading strategy.Reading in the right strategies can give you an insight into the article. For instance, using the "G-L-G" strategy when reading will quickily catch the main idea what the author wants to represtent.Furthermore, it will facilitate us to learn more about the article if we can combine our daily life and knowledg.

Third, having a strong will.It is the most important I think,if we don't keep reading, our reading ability may be go backward and restart again. But,I think it's the most difficult part to overcome for most of people, including me.

To sum up,being a good reader is not easy ,but I will try to do that.I think I will use the skill of "divide-and-conquer",divide it into several small parts, and combat these small parts one by one ,then conquer it finally!!

  56. I think I am not a good listener, writer, speaker, or reader in English. But I believe that I have active attitude of learning English, because I want to be a good reader. Thus, what can I do for being a good reader? I have some methods to be possible to provide to everybody.

    1. I read everything that I am interested on, including newspapers, magazines, books, even comic books. By reading them, I can facilitate my reading skill.

    2. I try to analyze the sentence structure in the article to make me realize the main idea more. For example, when I see the connective word, like “because”, I know this sentence is something about cause-effect.
    3. The third method is new way that I learned from the advance English class recently, making idea web and notes on article’s margins. Actually, I often use this way when I read articles in Chinese to let me get the point fast. But I forgot that I also can use this method in reading English articles.

Although learning English still is a tax on me, I believe that if I can use right ways of learning English, I will be a perfect reader someday.

  57. I want to comment Jeffrey's opinion. His methods are really helpful when I want to be relaxed and can learn at the same time. And I want to add something that can use in tests.
1.Get key words. When I listen to the tests , maybe the speaker's speed I can't reach , so I'll pay attention to some key words.By the way , don't be nervous for tax, just do your best.
2.Get some sentences. If you get some sentences , you can guess what speaker are saying. And sometimes you can know the whole story or article.
3.Take notes. You can listen and note something important,so when you answer the questions, you can find clues.
4.Eliminate.You can listen and see the questions at the same time.(If you can handle it well.)And eliminate the obviously wrong answers, that will give you time to remind what speaker's said.

I hope these tips can facilitate you :)

  61. I'd like to have a comment to Rita's post.
I run with Rita's writing tips, because when I was a senior high student, the English class has the writting test,it always give us a topic and asks us our perspective about this topic. And I always divide it into two parts, the first I always use the topic sentence to start, then write some opinion that most people think, then tell that my main point at the end of the first part.In the second part,I continue to expand my main point, and list 2~3 reasons to support my main point, like "To begin with.....,Second..........,Last but not the least..........",and at the end of the second part
,I conclude it to mach my main point. Therefore, the strategies about writing that Rita mention are very useful in writing, and I think I will combine these tips and my writting skills to make my writting be more completely!!

  65. Hello!everybody!
Even though I may not a good reader, but I still want to share some methods to read fast.

At the university,we will in touch with the original text or science paper.different from other English readings, the problem that obsess us is not only the meaning but also the unknown knowledge. However, someone may checking every word by dictionary, then thinking what is it talking about. But that will make you read very slowly, inefficiency and will be a tax on your learning.

There are some tips to help us reading fast that can also facilitate your textual relationship.

1.Never focus on new words.-Knowing the article meaning is more important than knowing the word meaning.Just like the strategics from our English class.

2.Predict the keypoint.-Without respect to novel, newpaper or science paper, all of them have a main idea even in a stage.Holding that will make you understand the article fast.

3.Remember the word which show many times-That may be the keyword of this article, and also be relate with the main idea.

I think these tips will help you to read fast and easily.

I'd like to talk about what do I think makes a good speaker.First,it need to do more practice. For example, when you are reading, try to "read the article out loud" rather than just "read" it.By doing so,not only can enhance your reading but also beef up your pronunciation.Second, before speaking, think about what you are going to say then articulate it out loud and you will not be so nervous.Although I may not a good speaker, but I still hope these can help you to improve your speaking.

We should put ourselves in the environment. For example, the most effective way to speak well is to travel and live in the country. So, you lots of opportunities to talk to others. You can not help but use the foreign language. If you don't have enough or money , you can use the resources in the language center in our school. You can talk to native speakers and excellent tutors. In addition, you can practice speaking English with your friends who are always around you.Keeping every opportunity to talk in English is probably a good way that you can try.
The most important of all,you don't have to be afraid of making mistakes.Just speak out.Practice makes perfect. If we take time to practice, we can beef up our speaking ability definitely.

Actually, I’m not good for English, but I definitely yearn to learning English , especially Writing and Reading. In the past, as I practiced writing, I usually had Chinese’s thinking, just as the Rita said, it’s not a good way. Because the difference between English and Chinese writing paradigm is huge. I try to let me don’t check any dictionary as writing, and read any kinds of paper or journal in peacetime that learn more writing skill from the reading, and use these on the next time. After that, I believe good writing needs more patient and persistence, I hope I could be a good writer like Rita.

There are some strategies to make a good speaker that I want to share with you.
First, try to understand what the lyric and radio Dj and actor or actress say. Listening and speaking can be tied together and we have to start from your interest, so that we can get more motivation to keep going on.
When you can understand what they say, pay more attention on their pronunciation, and analyse why they use it to make other people know their emotion.
Second, train you brain thinking by English. Then try to articulate your opinion buy talking in English. Most learner will be shy on this step. But take it easy, just try to speak it out.
If you want to beef up your speaking ability, try these two ways with me. I think they will work.

when I read a difficult article,I always scan it rapidly first, whether I totally understand it or not.
At the second time,I focus on the part that I can't get it. So,I start to guess the meaning base on th up and down paragraphs.

When I am taking a listening test, I will read the answers first as possible as I can. For example, after I finish first question, I move on to the second question to preview the answers before the second question comes out. This help me to guess what I might hear from the question. Therefore I can easily make a note about some key words or sentences and choose the right answer. In this way, I feel that I can lessen some tax while I am listening.

I almost just read the article word by word from the beginning to the end in the past, instead running with those strategies to get information efficiently.
