Dear all,

Please make your posts and comments here for this week (10/14-10/20)!

Since there was one magazine article talking about how to master job interviews,
I'd love you to think more and put together here every skill we've discussed.

What do you think about all these skills?

Some of the skills (called "study skills") are for students and learners,
and some (called "career skills") are for employers, employees, and even job hunters.

Seems like there's a huge difference in between.
Do you really think so?
Or you think that there's actually connection in between?
And does any of the study skills or any of the career skills have to do with "life skills"?
Why/ Why not?

Beware that this time,
  • you are STILL supposed to pay extra attention to the textual relationship
so that you organize your ideas from general to specific or to examples.

Also,

  • you should include at least 2 words or phrases (from the word list below) in your post and at least 2 words or phrases (from the word list below) in your comment. (Overlaps are allowed.)

And here's the word list.

  1. articulate
  2. cordial
  3. cocky
  4. decompress
  5. debrief
  6. pack
  7. nail
  8. interim
  9. regurgitate
  10. rapport
  11. set off

NOTE:

  • Please end your post and comment with your NAMEs (both English and Chinese names)!

  1. I think the study skills just like career skills , as long as we can connect them to one thing of our study attitude.
As we have to learn interview skills to find a job , so we have to learn study skills to be good grade ; before we have an interview or a exam , to express articulate is important , we have to let others know what are we talking about, get the main point in our mind, not just beat around the bush , that will be harmful to our appearance .
We know to keep proper confidence is benefit to our performance , it makes everyone feels we are well-prepared to deal with anything.; but too more confidence will be cocky; we may feel uncomfortable when we take a talk with that guys who always proud of themselves, even the interviewers.
These are my opinion, I think everyone has different ideas because the personal experience is different.

  2. In the Advanced English class, we have learned a number of study and career skills. Although the difference between the two but in fact they are quite similar.
In my opinion, brfore we joint interview the most important is practice.Practice not noly let us more familiar to articulate the contents we want expression, but also increase the faith as we in interview. Sometimes we can find some Shortcomings as we pratice.
In fact, interview is just talk to the people who you never meet. You should be more cordial and avoid cocky, like talk to your best friend. I think it helpful to ambience in interview.

  3. I think that I am not a good English speaker and writter, but I have confident that I am experienced in interview. Because I get the part-time job and attend NCHU are both from interview. Therefore, I want to share some interview skills I used.
First, I think you have to prepare all of things to make you to answer the question easily. You can assume some questions to ask yourself. Also, you can get some informations on the internet before you go to the interview that can substantial the understanding about the organization you are going to interview.
Secomd point is that you have to be very confident and friendly to the judge. You can't be over confident, they won't like you, they think that is cocky. You don't have to be nervous. Just be ware to your attitude.
The third point is that you have to wear the right cloths. It is very important. You have to wear the formal cloths, it's not including jeans or something look like sporting.
The last, you just think of that you really want to win this interview, and get the things you really want. Then I think the ambition will make you successful.

  4. Besides several interviews skill, I think to demonstrate your confident and originality is important , especially your working logic, meanwhile, if you feel nervous, can remind yourself to keep smiling, in addition, keep eye contact, pay attention to listening every question, in the course of interview, should be able to help you to articulate theme , nod from time to time, when you answer the question , only need proper expression answering, and avoid cocky ,because there are too much needn't be said, so that to expose more shortcomings.by joseph

  6. Study skills and career skills, in my own opinion, are two different skills. They are used in an opposite direction.

The tip of career skill is be quick, the employees need to understand what the boss want you to do in a minute, they need to have the skill to find all the information they need and make a debrief to the client. In a word, career skill means you need to know everything but don’t need to master it.

For study skill, students need to concentrate on few subjects and nail it, after all, knowledge are articulate together, different subjects come up on the same idea. The trick is to build a steady base before start climbing, and think over every question before asking.

Although two skill are different, it still have the same point to avoid, which is don’t be too cocky, there are people much more clever than us.

  7. In this case,I really want to learn some study skills and life skills from others. I think that I am a articulate person, but sometimes it is not good between friendship. Therefore, I really want to learn some skills from other people. It can decompress myself, too. About study skills, I face to some difficulties. My brain is not that good than before,so I really want someone that can share his study skills. Thanks a lot!

  8. I think there's actually connection in "study skills" and "career skills".For example,In the article of "Mastering the Interview" says we have to hold the attitude. Not only just in interview but also in our work even when we study. We should always hold our attitude to make sure that things is on their way. Another example is that I am a student major in Marketing. Actually most of our teachers ask us for presentation at class, so we have to practice and practice to make ourselves articulate. This is what we need in our career lives too. However, even we have those skills we still have to remember not to be so cocky. No mater how well we do, there are always some people better then us and we never know who they are. It is rude to be overconfident so we have to be careful about it.

  9. I think many of study and career skills are alike.
It’s important to show the interviewer that you are cordial in this job. Before the interview practice, practice and practice will make perfect perform and helps you avoid empty phrases.
Study skills and career skills are the same. For example, geography is the subjects which I feel interesting, so I read it again and again. Finally my geography test got high score. Job interview is like test, if you prepare well and decompress appropriately, you must get high score in the subject.

  10. As my opinion, study skills and carrer skills are different, but there are also some common parts. For instance, having a good attitude is important during student and adult age. Hand in your homework in time, concerntrate on class etc.. will make you become a good learner, and when you grow up become a employee in a company, finish the task you are given on time and try your best on every challenge you are facing will help you gain trust from the employer. As a result, having a good attitude will make you success during all stages in life.I think that could also become a 'life skill' indeed.

I have never been to a formal interview. I don't know if I can really talk to someone just like talking to a friend. I know it's important for not be to cocky, but I'll won't give a articulate speaking cause I get nervous easily. However, practice makes perfect. I think I should practice more to overcome my problem.

  13. I think that study skills and career skills are relate to each other. But the former is connected to test or interview proceeding, the latter is most talking about before preparation.
For example, if we want to nail any test, we need to practice, practice, and practice before we do that. And after that we also need to review the examination, finding out our weakness and trying to improve ourselves.
Contrariwise, when we are doing test or interview, we need some study skills to answer questions. For instance, when you someone asks you question, you have to find out the answer from your resume, life experience or professional abilities. (It’s really similar to”bottom-up”) When you respond inquires, you also can use some skills. Such as “general- example” or “general-specific”, organizing your content.
After all, we can use any skill at will, if only we can use them in the right timing

  14. In my opinion, there are some similar aspects between the study skills and career skills. We all need a good attitude to face these things. Before the interview, we have to practice again and again. Even if I’d know these skills clearly. But I am still not a good interviewer. I always got nervous at any important times, such as the interviews, tests or even presentations. Although I prepared lots of works to them, the performances did not reach my expectation. I have to learn the skills of how to decompress myself. In this way, I can perform greater and nail whatever lies ahead.

  16. I think the study skills and career are alike but not at all. The magazine article talk more thing about interview. Most of it are the same like practice, businesslike… All study and career need more time to practice but something different inside. The studies have the standard answer that you need to keep practicing and career do not have the standard answer, you need to know more thing about your company and boss, use your experience for practice, and you must has the good articulating your thoughts.
About the time for interview is right to arrive in a timely manner, if you need to submission of reports or meeting to your boss I think you must early. Early to arrive your boss will be happier. And you must has a strong rapport with your boss.

  17. I always believe that there is an invariable way to make things sueeccd. The way is "Always to maintain the good attitude", and even for "study", "career", or "life", the way is effective.

For study, the good attitude is patience. In order to be proficient in your study, you have to keep patient and cordial to practice some difficult calculation many times or memorize some boring knowledge again and again.

For career, the good attitude is patience, too. You have to be patient toward every interview before you finally gain a suitable job. And when you are rejected, with your patience, you won't feel disappointed and you'll keep confidence toward next interview.

For life, "patience" is even more important. It's imposible to be always lucky, so, when you are in a bad situation, you must to decompress yourself and deal with the problems patiently.

I believe that the things will be good if we can keep our patience toward everything, and this is the same point about study, career, and life.

  19. I forget my cipher, so I create "Kurufrog" from "Kururufrog"

It is different from the career skill to study the skill.
For studying skill, you can study knowledge in the school, and go to use it.
Study in the school, the pressure may not be large, and it needn't consider the money question.
It can train some good habits in school, For example, hand in homework on time,
look for the answer to the question, constant exercise homework etc..
For career skill, let me feel big pressure, this may concern my life.
Study to a lot of career skills from the English magazine.
I think the attitude is very important, you can not be too cocky, Otherwise, you will lose the job.
You have to practice, on time, hold the attitude, Clasp the heart cordial etc., it can help your work.
So, I think the career skill is different from the study skill.
At the work, Knowledge of study of school can not help your work.
But "life skill" maybe help your work. The life skill is a habit.
If you have good habits, you can face any situation.

Seems like an MMORPG online game, to learning the skill I choosing and I get the skill.
If I get the most skill, I will powerful than otherones and nailing
Learning more skills could not ask someone for help and saving money.
Maybe the interim would hardly, if I learned more skills, but I could solving events more effectively.
However, both the study skills and career skills are skills for people.
Therefor, there's not difference in between.

  22. There are a variety of study skills and career skills, some of them are similar, but some of them are different. Now,I focus on "attitude" in order to compare study and interview. On the premise, I think they are different intrinsically.

For interviewers, the first kind of attitude is "be polite."
Politeness can not only let interviewees feel delightful but also ease your tenseness.
    The second one is "confidence."
Confidence will make you look efficient and convincing.Employees may think you have a powerful ability of working, but remember never be cocky.
The last one is "cordial." If you have prepared some information about the company. You will let the interviewees feel you are serious in this meeting, and it can also reflect your working attitude.

For students ,the most important attitude is "be humble."
If you are modest and open-minded in learning, you will acquire more and more knowledge you don't know.

All of those skills worked in life, because we will face a lot of different situations,we must use appropriate attitude to conquer all predicaments throughout our life.

  23. As soon as mention the study, career and life skills, I think they have huge connection in between.

First, we talk about the study skill. I think there isn’t short-cut to get the top one in study, in my word, persistence and patient is the only way.

Second, from your studying attitude I think that will reflect to your life attitude .What motivation makes you willing to study hard? Is responsibility as a student? or you really want to prove how much you learn? Just as you face some dilemma in your life, do you want to do something meaningful but without any practical benefit, or pay effort to do something normal but with 100% repaid?

No matter what life type you are, as you are the employee or employer, your life skill have important connection with the career skill. If you are a cocky, selfish and benefit-first man, as you encounter problems, you will neglect your partner's need and only care about yourself, then, it never has well rapport with your colleague.

As a student, we not only learn the knowledge from study, but also learn the life wisdom in the study attitude, and further apply to your work in the future.

  24. A comment for amy
It's interesting idea to explain a word “patience” .It cannot overemphasize this word too strongly. She uses the skill “detail to global “ to express her opinion.
It means patience is important for everything, but I think the “skill” is a practical way for us to finish something. It can be trained just like teacher teach us. So I don’t know whether patience is a “skill” or not. It is so abstract for me.
It makes me to think of attitude for us. To do many things we need different skills , but we only need a kind of attitude no matter it is positive or negative.

I think the study skills and career skills are connection in between, and both of these have to do with life skills.
For example, if you have the good attitude ,you will not only learning faster but also help you interview easier.
if you nail in interview and get the job, your will learn more life skills from this job.for example,Debrief. It's useful in many ways and it can training your Courage.

  28. The relationship between study, career and life skills is that life skills contain the others and there are some connection between study and career skills.
When talking about life, we usually think it is borderless and student, employer, employee...these kinds of nouns are all used to express someone's status in his/her life track. So life contains everything of a person, it's skills do, too. For example, one of the study skills we have discussed is elimination and it also be used to our choices in daily life. We usually prior to eliminate the options that we don't like or don't fit us. On the other hand, keeping the faith that "Know everything will be fine." is the career skills our magazine mentioned and we can apply it to decompress ourselves from bad situation and get courage to set off again. Thus life skills are made of other skills just like study and career.
Then let's talk about the connection between study and career skills. There are some similar part between the two skills like practice, keeping it businesslike and review. But there are still some different like on time of career skills and buttom-up of study skills, they are base on the different job character.
Skills provide some better way for facing problem in life. Understand and make connection of skills can let us use them more free.

  31. No matter “study skills” or “career skills”, I think that have the same and different sections. The same sections, we have to good attitude to do anything. About the article of interview reported, practicing can helpful keep my faith and decompress. Simultaneously, it can also understand myself when interview should to going to say and clearly articulate. The different parts, study skills have to learn profession skills, it’s so hard and difficult. Career skills are likely life skills. Career skills that you have to know a lot of things and use them. So learn more experience is very important.

  34. In my opinion,it seems that there are some different between stydy skills and career skills about interview, but most of them are in common. The following is some skills that can apply in both study skills and career skills.

First, practice makes perfect. No matter what kind of interview you face, practicing is very important when preparing the interview. You have to know your face inside and out,try to articulate your special experience or project, avoid buzzworlds and empty phrease when rehearsing....etc.

Second, hold the right attitude.Right.Right attitude and strong ambition can impress the judge deeply.Besides, keep cordial rapport but don't be cocky.

Third, review the interview.Debrief what you expressed from the interview. It helps you bulide your database for the next interview.

Hovever, some specific career skills are different form study skills.Because the job interview is more comperitive. For example, maybe you have to collect some information about the company, and indicate that your ability can help the company. Therefore, the presentation of your profession ability is the main point.

To conclude, whatever the interview we face, just keep the faith, and do your best, nothing bad will happen. And its attitudes are also called"life skill"I think.

  37. In my opinion, the behavior you perform when being an employee is actually related to your study skills

A man who is lack of practice will never express his best part, no matter he is taking an exam or doing his job.

Practice is the basic of success , but the wrong attitude toward everything can ruin your accomplishments. Feel down for your grade? Lose your confidence after failing in finding a job? Don’t let your depression affect your will to fight. Just nail to the destination and it’s the process that’s counts.

The last but not the least, always remember to debrief your performance. We’ve taught to review the text books during the school-time, but a review for our job is also important..

All above skills can be applied to the life, because we are practicing、failing and improving throughout our life time. Finally, stay calm and confident is the best skill for facing any challenge.

I use the "attitude" tend to describe somebody's behavior, but she stresses people's mental state.
I can't deny that if we use mental state to inspect attitude, study skills and career skills are quite similar.
No matter studying or working, we should always maintain not only patience but also delight.
Patient alone is not enough without delightful, we still do things inefficiently.
Maintain delight will make you be more cordial on what have you done and easy to nail on the following work.

  41. Last week I read the article about mastering the interview , that's one kind of career skills. And in last few weeks , we talked about a lot of study skills. I think they are some difference between them but they have some common.
I think study and career all need more practice and keep the faith. Anything we learned absolutely all need practice , it can let us review what we learned and also achieve mastery through a comprehensive study. Sometimes we feel depreeed for study or career , we need to rebuild our mind and tell us we can do what we want to do if we really would like to do. Keep the faith is important for doing everthing. And don't forget to keep cordial.
I think that study is personal , all you did will feedback and belong to you. But career isn't , it's not only referring to how you work , but also meeting your employer's need or not. Sometimes they don't care your process(how you work hard) , they only care the results. So if we want to nail and stand out from the pack , we have to keep work businesslike , hold our attitude and the most important is do the homework about the company and employer's need.
Study skills and career skills are part of life skills. They all can be used into our life.Because life is more complex and full of variety.

Useing study skills correctly can increase the study efficiency ,let you get beeter job in shorter time or make more learning benefit for oneself .You don't even have to compare with other sometimes ,because after finished the study and learned the knowledge ,the job is done .
Aren't like study skills ,career skills is using to make one separating oneself form the pack .Nailing a interview or having a successful career not only need knowledge but also manners .Having a good relationship with colleagues is very importint in career ,so if you want to show you have much better ability but not be too cocky ,you need manners .

  48. I think among all the skills, there are some parts in common.
First, there is a saying"Attitude determines altitude."The attitude is the most important thing in any skills. If you take what you should do seriously and try hard to do it well, you might be successful more often.
Second, practice is also essential for all the skills.NO matter what stages are you in,whoever you are,you can practice more to make perfect. If you are a job hunter, practice the introduction as often as possible.Only through well preparation can let you decompress and won't screw the interview. If you are a student, you have to practice what you have learned again and again.Otherwise, you may easily forget what you have learned.

  49. From the begining of the semester, we have learned more about "study skills." I think there are some relationship between study skills, career skills, and life Skills.

The first skill, do not be too cocky. People should be humble when you acquire knowledge. Don't think you have owned a lot of knowledge. And it also has useful in career and in your life. Be humble makes your boss loves you more and promote interpersonal relationship.

The second skill, I think you should pack yourself elegantly. And I think there are two meanings about "pack." One of the meaning is internal, it about study skill. In the society, poeple must make themselves substantial. Another meaning is external, it about career skill and life skill. In my opinion, let your appearance looks good is important. It can make your superintendent and the friends around you more comfortable.

  53. About Meggie's comment~
I extremely agree that study and career all need more practice and keep the faith, especially for the part of keeping the faith.
Thanks to my experiences in the past, I realized that you have to trust yourself first and then you may have the chances to nail the difficulties or the interim. Without the confidence of whatever you have to face, you can't do it well. There are some slogans in advertisement talked about this concept or attitude. For example, NIKE said:"Just do it", Adidas said:"Impossible is Nothing" and TOUGH Jeansmith said:"Never give up". I think they all talked about the same thing that you have to keep your faith to confront everything you need to do.

They are rapport, and influence each other. And it also needs attitude. You should have more cordial to deal with your study, career and life. Therefore, if you learn something or do something in the furture. You are to yield twice the result with half the effort.

Study and work are both a part of our life, and life is a process of learning. So, it's quite important to use study skills on jobs and learn something form jobs.
And also, we have to be cordial but not cocky toward both study and work!

Sometimes we are the students or sometimes we are the employees. Then what skills do we have or need?
As a student or a employee, I think that first is hard and cordial to study or work for me.
Because no pain no gain, so we have to be hard to study even work.
Then we will get something such as useful knowledge or nice treatment.
Even if we didn't get anything, we should keep cordial attitude for our study or work.
That can help us study or work being always happy and it can make us to nail step by step.
If we are in the interim, don't be dejected.
Because there are not all anything to be smooth going.
We should keep the faith to do what we should do.
    That is enough!
Sometimes don't forget to decompress, because that will help us to study or work efficiently.

  66. As for mastering the interview, the skills mentioned in "Advance" are really important and useful. And my point of view is that there are actually some silmilarities between study skills and career skills and life skills as well.
For example, if we are going to nail something that have to earn other people's agreement, such as, interview, prensentation, examination, competition, etc., we should keep ourselves in cordial and practice thousands of times before that.
Besides, our attitude toward everything we have confronted is a curcial point that may
    determine whether we will success or not. A good attitude includes the management of time and the mindset when we face everything. Time management is what we have learn since we are still children. For instance, when we have an appointment with others, when we are attend a exam, when we are takeing trains etc., we should be there a few minutes early and never be late;
otherwise, we might leave bad impression on others or miss some big events. And the other is our mindest toward things, we should always keep our chin up and stay confident. That will help a lot while doing anything. However, when we show our faith to people, we have to beware of being too cocky, that is awkward.
Therefore, I feel that once we can understant those skills well, we can make things a lot easier.

It affects the first impression from the interviewer to you in addition to know you. Because it is improtant to show yourself in pack of prospects in interviews.

For the life skill, I consider that the technique and the attitdue are both very important.Because the technique can help you doing everything proficiently. In another way, the attitude makes you cordial and a great help in the scoiety.

  71. I think those skills are quite similar. In advanced, we might separate all these skills into three pare, before, during, and after the interview. When coming to study, we might also separate into three parts. Before the interview, we need to practice. Not only list the things in your mind but articulate it out loud. There are some specific questions in the text such as the challenges you overcame in university. As a student, we need to prepare before the class such as quick view of the books. During the interview, we need to be professional and try to stand out from the pack. In the class we need to be concentrate. After the interview, we need to write the questions and the answers down. This might help us to grow up in next interview. After the class, we need to review the points which teachers told us. Above these three parts, I think that they are quiet similar.

  77. Actually, I don’t think study skills have something to do with career skills, but if you force me to think up one, I may tell you the answer is to make good use of time. When we speak about study skills, we always talk about how to learn some in a efficient way and than it is the same purpose in the career skills. Perhaps both of them are so-called “skill”, a method can speed up achieving the goal, therefore, we can use study skill to make our learning to be quick, and we should learn something can promote our ability in the interim. So, in this angle, the rapport between study skills and career skills is existent. And, in my opinion, the relationship between career skills and life skill is very close, because the best life skill is to have good career skill! The reason is that when you have good career skills and than you may earn so much money that you may have more chance to get a more quality life.

Life skills pack part of study skills and career skills such as a big umbrella. We can use study skills and career skills in life skill. And we can use some experience of life skills to study skills or career skills. My interview experiences are few and I don’t have much career skills. I think her did list some very important point that we need to care about while we go to interviews. I think the most important thing is we need to prepare again and again. It’s not easy for most people to introduce ourselves in front of stranger who is judging us. Most of us feel nervous with interview. Maybe we should find a way to decompress ourselves. Anything can make us relaxed, for example, taking a deep breath, repeating encouraging sentences, etc.

Everyone may face to many difficulties in the lifetime so that there are some skills to learn for different purpose, such as study skills, career skills, social skills, etc. They are all included in life skills. Many of us who spent most of time on work and be educated. So the study skills and career skills are more important among them.
Using the right study skills is very helpful for reading. When we read, we always use the study skills, such as G-L-G method, skim, scan and glance. For the G-L-G method, the first G means the article’s main idea, usually the topic sentence. L means supporting details and second G means the summary. For skim, scan and glance, to skim through the article for main idea, to scan the details of the article, and glance at the article for time order.
One of the parts of career skills is mastering the interview. Nailing the interview is key to separating yourself from the pack and landing that next job. So there are some tips for interview.
    1. To practise more and more times is good.
    2. Be cordial, professional, polite and engaged when interviewing.

  98. If we want to talk about the relationship between “study skill” and “career skill”, we have to definition skill. What is “skill” means? I think it means an ability to do something well. For example, the study skills we learned in past weeks means that make study, reading, or writing more effective and better. And the magazine mentions that if you want to get a job, you have to master the interview. Nailing interview also is a skill of career. These skills are helpful to achieve their purpose. And all purposes can make our life become better. When we try to learn some abilities to make something about life get well, we can call these abilities “life skill”.
Take study skills for example. If we use right study skills, such as G-L-G, note-taking…etc, to study, we can learn something faster and expeditious. Then we also can get the information what we need quickly. And it also means we can get the answer or solution of the problem which about life. That promotes our life better.
And the career skill is the same result with study skill. For instance, if you follow those tips about interview which in the magazine, like that hold the attitude, or arrive in a timely manner, maybe you can increase the opportunity of getting this job. And then you can make your life more comfortable.
Besides study skill and career skill, there still have many skills about life, such as social skill, house keeping skill…etc, are useful for life. Even though there are a lot of skills to learn, don’t forget these skills are the same principle and they have connective relationship among them.

Sometimes, those things we should learn in job are more than we learn in school when we are still students. So we must keep cordial attitude nomatter in study or in career. And make efforts during the process. Finally debrief ourselves something we get.
